A space with a lattice ceiling abstracting both "Italian" and "Japanese" elements

 

Interior design for a restaurant to be opened in Shintomi-cho. Reflecting the chef's concept of incorporating elements of Japanese cuisine into Italian cuisine, we attempted to abstract both "Italian" and "Japanese" elements and express them as a space. The lattice ceiling in the main dining room and separate rooms references the lattice decoration found in traditional European halls and the lattice ceiling used in Japanese rooms with a high level of formal decorations. The main dining room is designed to resemble a plaza-like space that appears at the end of a narrow alley, with a large solid sapelli wood counter placed in the center of the room, where diners can enjoy the chef's cuisine in a space with a sense of unity.  The private rooms are designed to incorporate part of the alley, and are partitioned by fittings to ensure spatial independence, while still allowing diners to feel a connection with the main dining room and kitchen through the alley.
